Hopes of LTE Unifying 4G Slim At Best

Just in case you were wondering, next-gen LTE mobile broadband networks won't be unifying global communications anytime soon, and they may never do so, period. A new Wireless Intelligence report was published on Friday that estimates that over 200 LTE networks will have been launched around the world by the year 2015 (that is, of course, if the 2012 doomsday doesn't kill us first).

This may seem like fantastic news at first, but then you realize that your LTE device will be incapable of working on all of them. It is also estimated that a total of 38 frequencies are expected to be on these networks as well. Looking at the Wireless Intelligence chart may put some people at ease due to the fact that a majority of the LTE networks will be using the 700MHz spectrum. Unfortunately, there are two problems.

The first problem is that 67% of LTE networks are using 700MHz is for this year (2011). Looking at the inner ring of the chart shows that 700MHz is still currently the preferred frequency for networks running in 2015 but only 16% for the operators. The second problem is that even within range of a like spectrum, carriers can still use slightly different frequencies. This effectively removes the ability to move a device from one network to another.

Fragmentation of this sort is already visible in the U.S. LTE networks currently in development. AT&T, as well as Verizon, are both using 700MHz blocks though with a slight variance. Verizon's network will use 746 to 787MHz while AT&T's will use 704 to 746MHz.

Making sure that every country in the world is on the same spectrum is beyond impossible, especially considering the regions that have been using certain frequencies for years now. It may not even be possible to do so at this point anyway which is especially disappointing considering the fact that mobile internet is starting to empower users to think on a more global scale.

U.S. Cellular Announces 4G Services

U.S. Cellular, in conjunction with its partner King Street Wireless, has just announced that the company will be delivering high-speed 4G LTE services as well as 4G-enabled devices to more than 25% of customers spanning two dozen markets in time for this year's holiday season. Customers of U.S. Cellular with 4G LTE devices and services will experience faster data speeds when browsing the internet, accessing email, playing games and streaming videos.

The initial rollout of 4G LTE services for U.S Cellular is planned for selected cities in Iowa, Wisconsin, Maine, North Carolina, Texas and Oklahoma. These cities include some of U.S. Cellular's leading markets like Milwaukee, Madison and Racine in Wisconsin, Des Moines, Cedar Rapids and Davenport in Iowa, Portland and Bangor in Maine and Greenville in North Carolina.

According to President and CEO of U.S. Cellular Mary N. U.S. Cellular plans to introduce a plethora of 4G-enabled devices during the first phase of the company's 4G LTE deployment and will continue to expand its offering through 2012. Leaked Release Date for the Motorola Atrix 4G?

Everybody loves leaked news, just look at all the hubbub caused by WikiLeaks. If people can get information they know they are not supposed to have, then that makes it all the more exciting. Well, there may be some news leaked from AT&T about their upcoming Atrix 4G from Motorola.

The Motorola Atrix 4G from AT&T was easily one of the hottest devices on display at the recent CES 2011 event. The device has a dual-core processor, a laptop dock and an even cooler HD dock which can turn your smartphone into a mini-desktop computer complete with Firefox browser.

Yep, everything was told about the Atrix 4G at CES 2011, everything except for a release date. People were extremely excited about the device but were severely disappointed when they were not told when they would get their hands on this impressive device. However, thanks to an internal leak from AT&T, we may have that now.

A leaked internal AT&T screen has been found showing March 1, 2011 as well as the SKU of 65230 and many other specifications. Some people out there are skeptical over this release date though for one main reason. AT&T has a history of launching new phones and devices on Sunday. March 1, 2011 is a Tuesday. This could very well be a legitimate release date though it does break away from AT&T's traditions.

Pricing is also still a mystery and the leaked information didn't say anything about that. That being said, the Atrix is a smartphone, and not just any smartphone, a 4G smartphone. So you can probably expect nothing less than $200 on a new 2-year agreement. But that is definitely worth it for a phone with the dual-core Tegra 2 processor and performance strong enough to give you 1080p video.

4G on T-Mobile Tablets

On Friday, December 10, T-Mobile announced that by next year they plan to add 4G technology to tablets as an integrated wireless connection. One thing that the company unfortunately did not address is which tablets they would be providing this service for.

"T-Mobile will continue to be at the forefront of wireless innovation, delivering an aggressive 4G product lineup in 2011, including 4G tablets," said T-Mobile spokesman Tom Harlin.

"T-Mobile is working closely with the majority of our OEM partners to deliver 4G products by integrating HSPA+ into roadmaps in 2011 as the dominant global standard," the company said in a statement on Friday. "Consumers will continue to see HSPA+ fuel future innovation in a variety of mobile consumer electronics from smartphones and tablets to emerging devices.”

Already, T-Mobile has launched their MyTouch 4G, which was the first of the company’s phone lineups to utilize 4G technology, and obviously from the statements, the company plans to definitely improve its 4G technology use in the near future for phones and tablets. It was in November of this year that T-Mobile announced that its network was worthy of having the title “4G.”

T-Mobile said that they had turned on its HSPA+ in six more metro areas including Chicago. They also announced the retail availability of the myTouch 4G phone and a Dell Inspiron Mini 10 netbook with built-in HSPA+.

“HSPA+ is evolving a far more ambitious and long-term road map than was originally envisioned. T-Mobile is using an upgrade to HSPA+ to deliver faster 4G speeds today and is quickly bringing a number of HSPA+ devices to market that greatly enhance the mobile data experience for its customers,” the company said.

T-Mobile chief network officer Neville Ray said, "By the end of this year, we'll have two times [the coverage] out there from anything approaching a competitive LTE or WiMAX footprint."

There has been some major controversy brewing recently over the true definition and wireless standards of “4G.” This all began when the ITU, the global body that is charged with deciding on the wireless standards for things like 4G, said that nothing that was being sold in the United States actually met 4G standards. This means that everyone is making up their own 4G standards and at least in the U.S., 4G doesn’t necessarily mean the same things from carrier to carrier. T-Mobile wants to make it very clear that its HSPA+ is just as fast as Sprint’s 4G WiMAX.

“The footprint of our 4G service is not something that competitors are going to match anytime soon.”

It’s great to hear that tablets on T-Mobile could have 4G capabilities sometime in the near future. It would just be nice to know which tablets they plan to provide the service for. Hopefully, we won’t have to wait too long for them to begin offering 4G service. Until then though, I guess we’re just going to have to wait patiently for T-Mobile to get everything all together and figured out.
