Motorola Goes Crazy, Possibly Launching 8 New Smartphones Within Next 4 Months

Motorola has been popping up in the news left and right lately, but none of that news has been as exciting as the newest announcement from the mobile phone company. According to a recent report from TKTechNews, Motorola is planning on making up for its relatively quiet first half of the year by prepping as many as eight different smartphones all set to launch in the second half of this year. Yeah, you read that right, EIGHT different smartphones.

Phones like the Moto S and Moto X Play are poised to join the familiar Moto X+1 and Moto G but the real big news is that the company could be reviving the formerly popular Droid line with a potential three new Droid phones. If you are an avid follower of the mobile industry then you have probably already heard that Motorola should be releasing new versions of the Moto X and Moto G sometime around September 4. Outside of these two confirmations, everything else is rumor and hearsay, which is where things get tricky.

One model that recently started circling the rumor mill is code named "Shamu" and was tied to some talk regarding Nexus. However, this device could ultimately come out under the Moto S name when, or if, it ever surfaces for real. This shouldn't deter you from hoping for a Motorola Nexus, as that is always a possibility. In addition to that, the Moto X Play could also come out as a mini version of the Moto S.

Even more interesting is the fact that the Droid series of smartphones may no longer be exclusive to Verizon. An anonymous source has indicated that AT&T could be launching their very own branded versions of the handsets. Regardless of carrier, it is advisable for mobile users be on the lookout for a refreshed Droid and Droid Maxx in addition to a Droid Turbo, all set to come out this year. Side note: If you are a Star Wars fan then you will be pleased to know that one of these devices may be offered in conjunction with an upcoming Star Wars promotion, which is pretty exciting news if you ask me.

This is definitely an interesting report, amplified by the fact that we are already well into the second half of the year, meaning there isn't much time left for these eight new Motorola devices to start coming out for real. The specific eight devices that are rumored to be coming out are the Droid, Droid Maxx, Droid Turbo, Moto X+1, a successor to the Moto G, Moto S, Moto X Play and Motorola Nexus. While all these choices may seem like a good idea and a good way to boost sales for Motorola, this could have the opposite effect. This past Wednesday, Lookout added some new features to their mobile security app. These are features that you won't find on most other mobile security apps. A "very reliable source" has leaked information to multiple tech outlets regarding the Droid Bionic, including an unreleased ad spotlighting the Verizon dual-core LTE Android device. The ad is supposed to run in the Best Buy Buyer's Guide set to be released this Sunday.

The ad looks to be heavily focused on the Droid Bionic, with the smartphone appearing multiple times throughout the pages. The details in the ad give the final specifications of the device, which go along with previously leaked details. The ad confirms a 4.3" touchscreen display, 8 megapixel rear facing camera, VGA front facing camera, full 1080p HD video recording, Android 2.3 Gingerbread, microSD slot, Bluetooth, and up to 320GB of expandable memory.

The only thing not listed is the price or a solidified release date. However, after seven months of waiting, it looks as if the Droid Bionic is just around the corner and may be this year's perfect Christmas present. Motorola has speculated on a September release date which seems even more likely, thanks to this ad.

Motorola Mobility Up, While Motorola Reports Overall Loss

Motorola reported that its Motorola Mobility has sold 440,000 Xoom tablets and 4.4 million smartphones in the second quarter.

Motorola went on to report a $56 million loss this quarter, compared to $80 million in net earnings during the same period last year; however, Motorola Mobility reported a revenue of $3.34 billion, up from the $2.61 billion in revenues that was reported last year.

While Motorola’s phone business reported a loss of $31 million on the sales of $2.4 billion, Motorola’s home division reported a profit of $62 million on revenue of $907 million.

Despite the fact that overall Motorola lost money this quarter, according to an AP report, Sanjay Jha, the chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Mobility, remains hopeful. He said that by the holidays Motorola will release at least one more 4G smartphone and two 4G tablets.

Jha did also comment on the fact that Motorola’s third quarter earnings will not be as expected, due to the delay of the Droid Bionic, as well as a lower amount of tablet computers, lower prices and a seasonal decrease in the sales of set-top boxes.

"In the second quarter, Mobile Devices launched several new smartphones in the U.S. and markets around the world. Revenues grew over 40 percent driven largely by Latin America and China where sales more than doubled year over year. Our Home business delivered another strong performance, and we introduced several innovative products and services for next generation multi-screen video solutions," Jha said in a statement. "With a focus on profitable growth and delivering differentiated LTE smartphones and tablets, we expect to achieve profitability in Mobile Devices in the fourth quarter and for the full year 2011."

Motorola is currently predicting that its third quarter will either allow them to break even or show a very small profit.

10.1-inch Honeycomb Tablet Coming from Samsung this Sunday?

Whoa, whoa, whoa, hold the phones! Could Samsung be launching a Galaxy Tab 2 with Honeycomb this Sunday? If so, it is definitely a bit of a surprise to the tech world.

According to sources from Pocket-lint, Samsung will be launching a 10.1-inch tablet on Sunday night complete with Honeycomb as the start of Mobile World Congress. According to what we know so far, the device will be thinner and lighter that the current Samsung Galaxy Tab, will have a bigger screen and be featured in black as opposed to white.

Running Honeycomb, (Android 3.0) Samsung is hoping the new tablet will be able to hold its own against some of the more popular devices out there like the Xoom from Motorola and the dominating iPad from Apple. Pocket-lint sources also believed that Samsung was considering launching a 9-inch tablet at the same time, making it appear that Samsung didn't really have a full plan laid out. However, it appears now that this is untrue.

Specifications are scarce on this device. What we do know is that it will have a dual-core Qualcomm chip as well as an 8-megapixel camera. It has also been released that this Galaxy Tab will be physically smaller than Apple's iPad, even though it has a moderately larger screen than Apple's device.

I guess we will figure out more details concerning this tablet, which is still without a name, on Sunday. Samsung's first Galaxy Tab did o.k. but couldn't really hold a candle to the iPad. But then again, what device could? Maybe this next generation device will be different. One can only hope.

A leaked internal AT&T screen has been found showing March 1, 2011 as well as the SKU of 65230 and many other specifications. Some people out there are skeptical over this release date though for one main reason. AT&T has a history of launching new phones and devices on Sunday. March 1, 2011 is a Tuesday. This could very well be a legitimate release date though it does break away from AT&T's traditions.

Pricing is also still a mystery and the leaked information didn't say anything about that. That being said, the Atrix is a smartphone, and not just any smartphone, a 4G smartphone. So you can probably expect nothing less than $200 on a new 2-year agreement. But that is definitely worth it for a phone with the dual-core Tegra 2 processor and performance strong enough to give you 1080p video.

A Tablet Coming From Motorola

Everyone wants to go head to head with the iPad and put a little competition into the game, and Motorola is not about to be left behind. Unfortunately, it is going to be awhile before we see a glimpse of this tablet from Motorola.

The co-chief executive of Motorola, Sanjay Jha, told individuals at Motorola’s investment conference, “We want to make sure that any tablet that we deliver is competitive in the marketplace, and I think all of us will make sure that we will only deliver that when that occurs.”

I think that it is definitely a good idea that Motorola spends the time perfecting a tablet so that they can be competitive, but I also feel that they should be careful not to take too much time because they do not want the tablet hype to wear off at all.

Some are hopeful that the tablet will be released by early next year, but there are still some issues that need to be worked through. The latest build of Google’s Android is one of these concerns. Froyo, Android 2.2, Google’s mobile operating system, is not exactly one hundred percent ready for a full-on tablet. Jha stated that they simply will wait until the Google, Android software can accommodate a tablet. This is certainly disappointing but understandable.

The Devour is 3G capable and runs on the Android 1.6 platform. It has a 3 megapixel camera with continuous digital zoom as well as a fixed focus and image editing tools like cropping, geo tagging and rotating.

The Devour is also MOTOBLUR enabled. It has picture id, ringer id, and social network status on the main display and it is capable of directly messaging Facebook, Twitter and MySpace. The Devour also lets you share photos via MySpace, Photobucket, Picasa and Facebook.

With this device you can also customize your homescreen with MOTOBLUR's Happenings, Status and Messaging widgets which deliver you status posts and things like that. You can also customize it with RSS news widgets to keep you informed 24-7. MOTOBLUR also synchs personal and work contacts and connected social networks.
